Jefferson Indicted

Representative William Jefferson (D-La) was indicted on Monday of federal charges of racketeering, money-laundering, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and soliciting bribes of more than $400,000. Everyone knew that when federal investigators found $90,000 in cash in the freezer at his Washington home, that something would be happening. Everyone that is, except his constituents in New Orleans, that re-elected him last November.

Now his constituents are worried that they won't be represented in Congress at a time when they can use all the help they can get. They should have thought about that before they voted for him. Then again, it actually seems like more of a slap at Republicans that couldn't field a candidate that was preferable to a criminal to they citizens of New Orleans. For that matter, they couldn't even un-seat Ray Nagin as Mayor.

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Cold Hard Cash"

so if I run for president do I need to take my stash out of the freezer, and put it where? a Swiss Bank Account???

It is nice to see that coruption knows no party lines. And I have to admit if my community were in shambles and there where a lot of rich people who did a lot of nothing for me I would not be eager to elect them. Better the crook you knwo than the crook you don't!

If you ran for president ... I'd hold your cash for you ... don't worry, I'm honest ... really ... just hand it over.

No receipt needed

Didn't Jeffery Dahmer(sp) keep people in his freezer? You'd think Jefferson would have taken notes. Freezers are always investigated. ;)

I saw this on the news and it really irritated me cause I am a BIG Scrooge about wasteful spending and financial irresponsibility.

In reading another blog, I read that "Fox" put up Connors picture for Jefferson and He was not a happy camper...but,honestly don't you think its about time they filed charges???..

A Congressman....involved in corruption? The only thing he did differently than all the others in Washington is he got caught.

snowelf ... freezers are not exactly the best hiding places ... where would you hide $90,000.00?

evalinn ... thank you. The point of things is this is an elected official that seems to be spending the majority of his time orchestrating ways of shaking down businesses and foreign governments to profit himself. This is a Congressman who's district includes the devastated city of New Orleans. The people of New Orleans deserve better than him ... as does this country.

tapline ... it is well past time that they filed the charges. Problem is that when it is a member of Congress, they need to be sure they have an iron-clad case (maybe the money was legit) before they file. The fact that he was Black also probably figured into how careful they were. No one wants to be accused of racism.

mike ... when did you become so cynical? Actually what this guy did differently was that while other congressmen (and senators) do this, they funnel all the money through their campaign coffers. Jefferson funneled it through his freezer.

LOL, Paul! It is a pretty crazy story.

Hmmmmm, that is just wrong on so many levels! Do people not think things through, or are we just a bunch of "what are you going to do for me TODAY" kind of people and not worry about a year from now!

thanks for coming by! very nice place you have here :)

myutopia ... it kind of reads like a Grissolm novel ... but non-fiction.

jenny ... it's probably a little of both, they are not thinking and they want things NOW. The rest of them do think things through ... they are the ones that don't get caught

blancodeviosa ... thanks for stopping by, did you want to share your thoughts?

In essence, he got caught doing what ever congressman does. For the most part it's legal money laundering. Unless you get caught.

Not cynical. Just calling it like I see it. Living 20 minutes outside of Washington has shown me that honesty is something they don't know about in that town. They put a nice face on for TV but when you live around them, you get a whole new insight into the inner workings of the Capital.

mike ... their are actually people that expect the corruption in DC. They actually think it is justified because we don't pay our elected officials enough. I say if you want to get rich, you have no place in politics.

Mike Minzes said...

Agreed. Public servants should serve the public, not the cash flow.

Paul Champagne said...

mike ... you know there are elected officials that serve the people ... but the way the system is set up, the honest ones don't last long. As soon as it becomes known that you don't play the game, the lobbyists pour money into the campaign of someone who will, more money means more votes and the honest guy is out.
